President Trump says land swap may be necessary for Russia, Ukraine peace deal

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is preparing for a highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this Friday.

The Trump administration says the top priority is brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

“I think it will be good, but it might be bad. I’m here for one reason: to get rid of a war somebody else started,” said Trump.

The Trump administration has been trying to negotiate an end to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine for months now.   President Trump says he hopes the meeting leads to a ceasefire, but he’s tempering expectations.

“I may say lots of luck, keep fighting or I may say we can make a deal,” said Trump.

President Trump has suggested a ceasefire deal might mean Ukraine has to give up land.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia, and he’s expressed concerns that Russia’s intention is to deceive the U.S. in the upcoming meeting.

European leaders have also expressed fears that President Trump may be convinced to make a deal that favors Russia, but the president says he plans to keep Zelenskyy and the European allies involved.

The German chancellor is working to organize talks with the U.S. ahead of Friday’s summit.
